The Gracie family did not start in Brazil. Long ago, their family came from Paisley, in Scotland. 7 Gastão Gracie was a business partner in a circus in Belém, called the American Circus. In 1916 a circus in the town put on a show with Conde Koma. 5,7

The boy who watched

Gastão's eldest son was called Carlos. He was born on 14 September 1902. In 1917 he watched Maeda and started to train. 5,7 He was 14 or 15, because he turned 15 that September. 4,5

Who taught Carlos? That is the first thing people argue about.

Off to Rio

In 1921 the family moved to the big city of Rio de Janeiro. 5 Gracie University, which is run by two of Hélio Gracie's grandsons, says the first Gracie academy in Rio opened in 1925. 15,106

Hélio

The youngest brother, Hélio, was born on 1 October 1913. 6 The most famous story in jiu-jitsu is about him, and it is told two ways.

A slim man on his back using his legs to tip a much bigger training partner over.

That is the part that matters. The art was shaped so that a smaller person could use it, and position comes first to this day. The IBJJF, the group whose rules most jiu-jitsu contests use, says a match is a chain of positions of control that ends with a submission hold. 43 Hélio died on 29 January 2009. 6

Who founded it?

Ask who started it and you get different answers. The Roger Gracie Association calls Carlos the founder and Hélio the co-founder. 105 Gracie University says it is Hélio's system. 106 Other books name all the brothers together. 1 The IBJJF says its highest belt, the 10th degree red belt, was given only to the pioneers, the five brothers who started it all: Carlos, Oswaldo, George, Gastão Jr. and Hélio. 40

A red belt, a black belt with a red bar and a red and black coral belt lying on a wooden bench.

Carlos died on 7 October 1994. 5 But before his family took jiu-jitsu to the world, there was another line of teachers, and it started on a beach.
