How did Muay Thai become a world sport?

IFMA's first world championships in 1993, a new spelling, professional councils, the World Games, recognition by the IOC in 2021, a grading system for the world, and two UK bodies with different rules for children.

, the International Federation of Muaythai Associations, held its first world championships in 1993, with 20 countries. 20

Two amateur fighters in head guards, elbow guards and shin guards in a ring at a 1990s championship.

Amateur Muay Thai looks different from the stadium kind: a with no face cage, elbow and shin guards, a gum shield and, for younger athletes, a body protector, over three rounds of up to three minutes for adults, scored on the 10 point must. 20,21

Councils and titles

Professional Muay Thai built its own bodies. The World Muaythai Council, the , was set up in 1995 by a Thai parliamentary resolution and sanctioned by the Sports Authority of Thailand; the World Muaythai Federation was formed the same year by the Professional Boxing Association of Thailand. 6 The World Boxing Council's Muay Thai division, , was established in 2004. 31

One word, and a family of games

Muaythai entered the Southeast Asian Games in 1995, gained Olympic Council of Asia recognition in 1999, joined GAISF in 2006 and the World Games family in 2013. 20 When it joined SportAccord in 2006, IFMA adopted the one word spelling Muaythai, because a sport's name could not contain a country's name. 1

IFMA names five pillars for the sport, respect, honour, tradition, excellence and fair play. 20

It has been on the World Games programme since Wrocław 2017, with 87 athletes; Birmingham, Alabama, in 2022 had 12 weight classes, equal for men and women; Chengdu 2025 had six classes and 48 athletes. 8 It was on the programme of the 2023 European Games in Poland. 8,20

The Olympic movement

The IOC's Executive Board gave IFMA provisional recognition on 6 December 2016, and the 138th IOC Session in Tokyo gave it full recognition in July 2021. 20,30 In 2019 the WMC merged into IFMA as its professional arm, and the federation took its present name; until then it had been the International Federation of Muaythai Amateur. 5,6,20

IFMA's competitions now go beyond fighting: a semi contact discipline, and cultural events in which the wai kru is performed solo and traditional techniques are shown in pairs, the . 20,21 In May 2025 it began rolling out a 15 level grading system through its national federations, "from grassroots to Grandmaster". Under IFMA's earlier scheme, the first grade largely focused on the wai kru. 27

An athlete performing a wai kru posture on a mat while three judges watch from a table.
Two men in traditional wraps demonstrating an elbow, a block and a controlled knee on a competition mat.
Three adult students in white headbands kneeling with palms together while two examiners watch.

Britain today

IFMA's constitution allows one national association per country, and its own directory names its UK member: the United Kingdom Muaythai Federation, the , in Birmingham. 20,23 When the UKMF joined is not confirmed. 40

is a community interest company founded in 2022 "to build a strong, united, and transparent governing body". It is not an IFMA member, and it runs its own events: its third British Championships in 2026 had 330 athletes from 63 gyms, and its University Championships 285 athletes from 23 universities. 20,41

Two adult novice fighters in full protective kit in one of several rings in a big sports hall, a paramedic at ringside.

No UK sports council recognises any Muay Thai body. 49 And the two UK routes treat children differently: IFMA's rules allow strikes to the head from the year a child turns 12, with no elbows or knees to the head until the year they turn 14, while Muaythai GB's junior rules allow no strikes to the head for anyone under 16. 21,42 So the first questions for any gym are which body, which rules, and how head contact is handled for children. The pages that follow set it all out.
