Facts here were checked on 8 October 2026 against each body's own publications and the UK sports councils' lists. Where a body describes itself, the words are its own claim. 95
The short version for families
- Karate in the UK is run by many independent associations, each with its own grades, syllabus and insurance. A club usually belongs to one association, which may in turn belong to an umbrella body. 95
- For the Olympic and WKF sport route there is one UK body, the British Karate Federation (BKF), with four home nation members. 60
- No English karate body is recognised by Sport England. Sport England's list says "No recognised governing body in England" for karate. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each have a recognised body. 95
- Several English organisations describe themselves as a "governing body". That is their own description; it is not the same as sports council recognition. 95
World bodies
| Body | What it is |
|---|
| World Karate Federation (WKF) | The world federation for sport karate, recognised by the IOC as the sole governing body for sport karate since 1999; founded as WUKO on 10 October 1970, renamed WKF on 20 December 1992. Allows one national federation per country. Headquarters in Madrid. 1,16,54 |
| European Karate Federation (EKF) | The WKF's European body; grew out of the European Karate Union formed in 1963. 16 |
| World Union of Karate-do Federations (WUKF) | A separate world body that accepts more than one federation per country, so styles and associations can join without going through the WKF member. | Style world bodies | For example the JKA, SKIF, JKS and WSKA (Shotokan); IOGKF and TOGKF (Goju-ryu); Wadokai, Wado-ryu Karatedo Renmei and WIKF (Wado-ryu); World Shito-ryu Karate-do Federation and Shito-ryu International Karate-do Kai (Shito-ryu); Kimura Shukokai International; IKO groups and the IFK (Kyokushin). 5,6,7,8,9,17 |

England's other umbrella bodies, in their own words
The English picture is contested. These are what each body says about itself, as recorded on 8 October 2026. 95
- Federation of English Karate Organisations (FEKO International): "working closely with the Sport and Recreation Alliance and other major karate organisations to establish a Sport England recognised National Governing Body for karate"; "in direct membership to the World Union of Karate-Do Federations". 45 member associations listed.
- English Karate Federation CIC: "We do not serve as a National Governing Body". Its member list is not currently published.
- England Karate Ltd: "we are the only governing body that is working with Sport England to secure recognition as the governing body for Karate in England". A claim of work in progress, not recognition.
- Karate England: its contact page points people to "the new National Governing Body, England Karate". A WUKF member.
- English Karate Governing Body (EKGB): historic; no longer active.
Multi style martial arts bodies (for example NAKMAS, the Amateur Martial Association, the British Combat Association and the British Martial Arts & Boxing Association) also register karate clubs and use "governing body" in their own descriptions; none is on a sports council list. 95

What to tell families
- Ask which association the club belongs to. That tells you whose grades, syllabus and insurance apply. 61,63
- Ask about insurance and a licence. Association licences usually include insurance. 63,64
- Recognition is not a quality mark on its own, and lack of it in England is the normal situation, not a warning sign: no English karate body is currently recognised. 95 Safeguarding and teaching quality are better judged with the NSPCC's five questions. 91
- For the Olympic or WKF pathway, competitors need to come through the BKF's home nation member. 60
