Rules change, so every rule here carries its date. There are two kinds of kung fu competition: forms, , judged on a 10 point scale, and fighting, either full contact or, for most children and club members, light contact . The IWUF sets the world rules, and in the UK the runs the national championships. 40,41,43,82,84
The Olympics and the Youth Olympics
- Not an Olympic sport. The IWUF aims to make it one. It was shortlisted as a possible extra sport for Tokyo 2020, in 2011 and again in 2015, but not chosen. 40
- Recognised by the International Olympic Committee at its 113th Session in 2002. With the IOC's approval the IWUF held wushu tournaments alongside the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympics. 40
- Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Wushu's first Olympic series medal events are set for 1 to 3 November 2026 at the Dakar Expo Center: 48 athletes, 12 in each of four events, men's and women's long fist combined with the staff, and men's and women's taijiquan combined with the tai chi fan. They use the IWUF's 3rd Set of and its 2024 taolu rules, judged without degree of difficulty. Sanda is not included, and no British athlete is on the IWUF's list. 40,45 Wushu's place was approved in 2020, for Games then planned for 2022. 3,40
- Other multi sport games: the Asian Games since 1990, and the World Games in 2009, 2013, 2022 and 2025. 40

How age is counted
It differs. The WKFE counts taolu ages by year of birth but sanda ages by actual age on a fixed day; BCCMA light sanda uses either age on 1 January or age at registration, as each event decides; and the 2024 GB trials used year of birth. Check the rule before entering a child near an age boundary. 51,82,84
