Governing bodies

One recognised chain, WAKO to Kickboxing GB and Kickboxing Ireland, several independent world bodies that sanction events in the UK, and most clubs belonging to none of them. Recognised always says by whom.

Facts here were checked on 8 October 2026 against each body's own publications and the UK sports councils' lists, and some again on 26 October 2026. Where a body describes itself, the words are its own claim. 140

WAKO's 2026 rule on other organisations

WAKO calls itself "the sole governing body for kickboxing worldwide" and since March 2026 bars its members and athletes from events it has not approved. This is WAKO's own position, and other bodies do not accept it. Families whose clubs enter both WAKO and non WAKO events should ask their club how the rule is applied. 42

What a family should check

  • Is the club affiliated to Kickboxing GB, or Kickboxing Ireland in Northern Ireland, to another body, or independent? Use the body's own club finder. 80,87
  • Which rules does it compete under? Under WAKO's 2026 rule this can matter. 42
  • Are the coaches DBS checked, insured and safeguarding trained? The NSPCC's five questions for any sports club apply. 80,130
