Governing bodies

No world governing body, four rule makers, one UK governing body recognised by the sports councils, and the teams that shape most academies. Recognised always says by whom.

Facts here were checked on 8 October 2026 against each body's own publications and the UK sports councils' lists, and some again on 26 October 2026. Where a body describes itself, the words are its own claim. 140

The short version for families

  • No single world governing body. Several organisations write rules and run championships, the IBJJF, the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation's AJP tour, ADCC and the JJIF, and none of them is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. 17,27,66
  • One UK governing body recognised by the sports councils. The UKBJJA is recognised by Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales and Sport Northern Ireland. 80,140
  • Teams, not associations, shape the academy. Day to day, what shapes a jiu-jitsu academy is usually its team, Gracie Barra, the Roger Gracie Association, Alliance and others, or its independence. 100,102,105,141
  • What it means for a family: ask the academy two questions, "which team, if any?" and "is the club a UKBJJA member?" Together they tell you the curriculum, the children's belt system, the competitions on offer, and whose insurance, DBS checks and safeguarding apply.

UK bodies

, United Kingdom Brazilian Jiu Jitsu AssociationBrazilian jiu-jitsu, by Sport England, sportscotland, Sport Wales and Sport Northern Ireland; recognised in 2021 and on the sports councils' September 2026 master listFormed in 2012 by members of different clubs and teams; non profit; a board of up to 12 and an elected council of up to 24, with regional directors for England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland and councillors for junior development, disability inclusion, armed forces, universities and women. Services: insurance for clubs, instructors and members; DBS, PVG and Access NI checks; first aid, safeguarding and coaching courses; referee training; national rankings; Kids League; University League; UK Anti-Doping rules; a club finder. "Over 300 member clubs", its own figure. It does not award belts or set a syllabus80,81,82,83,88,89,140
Great Britain Ju Jitsu, GBJJNot recognised by the sports councils for Brazilian jiu-jitsuThe JJIF's member federation for Great Britain, and so the route into JJIF ne-waza events; says it is "working towards recognition as a National Governing Body"66,90,140

Watch the acronyms. The British Ju-Jitsu Association, BJJA GB, is recognised for traditional Japanese ju-jitsu and is a different body from the UKBJJA; "BJJA" there does not mean Brazilian jiu-jitsu. The Jiu Jitsu Foundation is likewise a ju-jitsu organisation, not a Brazilian jiu-jitsu one. 140

Home nations. The sports councils list no separate Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish jiu-jitsu governing body; the UKBJJA covers all four nations through regional directors. 81,140

Adults from different academies sitting around pushed together tables in a plain meeting room.

The Olympic question

  • Jiu-jitsu is not an Olympic sport, and no jiu-jitsu body is recognised by the IOC. The JJIF is a member of AIMS, the alliance of independent sports federations, not one of the federations the IOC recognises, and the SJJIF belongs to neither group. The JJIF's own page lists AIMS, the IWGA, the Olympic Council of Asia and FISU, but no IOC recognition. 27,66
  • Routes to multi sport games. Competitors can reach The World Games and, in Asia, the Asian Games only through the JJIF's ne-waza discipline, which for Great Britain would mean Great Britain Ju Jitsu. How British athletes are selected is not confirmed. 20,66,67,90
  • Who wants Olympic status. The SJJIF was founded with that aim, and the JJIF is described as working to make sport ju-jitsu an Olympic event. ADCC is often called "the Olympics of grappling", a nickname, not a status. 18,20,21
  • The British side. The UKBJJA's recognition is by the four sports councils as a national governing body, not as an Olympic sport. 80,140

Teams: how jiu-jitsu is organised instead

  • Academies join teams, not associations. Most academies affiliate to a team led by a senior black belt or a family, and teams publicly invite new affiliates: "Open a Gracie Barra school", "Be an affiliate" at Alliance, "Start an academy" with the Roger Gracie Association, "Become a CTC" with Gracie University. Teams can require their own curriculum, uniform and instructor training. 100,102,105,106
  • A belt comes through the team's . Promotions are signed by the team's black belts; the IBJJF records which professor approved each athlete, and Gracie Barra checks lineage before certifying black belts. 40,100
  • The UKBJJA sits across teams. It says it is "non-political and welcomes everyone, regardless of team or affiliation", and it insures each location separately even where a team has several. Its main check on rank is that instructors are purple belts or above "from a verifiable lineage". 82

Names undercount affiliation: on 8 October 2026 EveryDojo listed 754 jiu-jitsu clubs, 193 recorded as UKBJJA members and 559 as independent of any recorded association, which does not say whether they belong to a team. 141

What to ask a club

  • "Which team, if any, and is the club a UKBJJA member?" The team tells you the curriculum, the children's belt system and the competitions; UKBJJA membership tells you the instructor is at least a purple belt from a verifiable lineage, DBS checked, first aid and safeguarding trained, and insured. 82,100,102,106
  • Safeguarding: the NSPCC's five questions for any sports club, and the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts map in England. 121
  • Recognition is a sign, not a guarantee. A UKBJJA member club has a route to checked coaches, insurance and safeguarding training. Families should still ask the questions above. 82,121
  • Do not confuse jiu-jitsu bodies with ju-jitsu bodies. The UKBJJA is for Brazilian jiu-jitsu; BJJA GB is for Japanese ju-jitsu. 140
